The focus of UTS: International Studies' research effort is cultural diversity and comparative social change - particularly but not exclusively in East and Southeast Asia, Latin America and Europe. All academic staff at the Institute work within social sciences or humanities, with regional specialisations and first-hand knowledge and experience of the relevant countries for their research.

Researchers at UTS: International Studies conduct individual research and participate in the Institute's joint research programs. The three current programs are Cross Cultural Regimes of the Senses (commenced in 2006) , Contesting Euro Visions (commenced in 2005) and World Literature:The UTS: International Studies Interview series . The first two programs will have a five year lifespan and provide the focus for larger, collaborative research projects.
